THE CENTRE FOR HEALTHY INTERNET USE WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO A BODY OF RESEARCH THAT SHOWS EXCESSIVE INTERNET USE IS HARMING LIVES. WE ARE A GROUP OF COUNSELLING THERAPISTS COMMITTED TO TREATING DIGITAL MEDIA ISSUES AND ADVANCING TREATMENT APPROACHES IN THIS EMERGING FIELD OF MENTAL HEALTH.
The mission of the Centre for Healthy Internet Use is to enable productive and enjoyable use of interactive digital technologies and avoid uses that lower the quality of life. CHIU offers evidence-based counselling and practical solutions that assist individuals, families and organizations to incorporate interactive media into healthy lives and cultures.
Our counsellors are trained in substance and behavioural addictions. All are familiar with the latest evidence-based approaches to treating internet addictions and the mental health issues that commonly accompany excessive use (depression, social anxiety). Counsellor and client may identify other forms of treatment and the counsellor may refer the client to a physician, psychiatrist or support program.
We meet the need for public education on the potential harmful effects of excessive internet use by providing presentations, workshops and coaching to schools, youth camps and community organizations.
Workplaces are where people spend a lot of their online time. Protocols for use and time-when management increase productivity. We introduce Restoration Therapy to the workplace, which not only increases productivity, it improves the mental health and cognitive functioning of employees.
