COUNSELLING IS ABOUT YOU. YOU ARE THE PERSON BEST ABLE TO DECIDE IF YOU NEED TO MAKE CHANGES IN YOUR LIFE AND MAKE A PLAN TO ACHIEVE THEM. OUR ROLE IS TO CREATE A SPACE WHERE YOU FEEL COMFORTABLE AND SUPPORTED ENOUGH TO EXPLORE WHATEVER IT IS THAT BROUGHT YOU TO COUNSELLING. WE WILL GUIDE THAT EXPLORATION, BUT WE DON’T HAVE YOUR SOLUTION. YOU DO.
The goal of counselling is to assist you to find balance in life that includes internet use. We believe that when used excessively, our digital devices limit our enjoyment of the world. We substitute “screenality” for reality. We stop doing things we once enjoyed. We look at photo-shopped photos of nature instead of walking in nature. We substitute friends we can never really know for friends that can give hugs. We miss the world around us. A world full of interesting people, things to do, and inspiring, beautiful places.
Every individual is unique. Our goal in counselling is to understand you in your world. Together we explore the impact excessive digital media is having on your life and the unique reasons you are trapped in patterns you would like to change. Our counsellors are experts in treating addiction behaviours, depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and other dispositions that contribute to unhealthy use of digital media.
Our counsellors use a variety of evidence-based approaches to therapy. We adapt these approaches to our client’s situation and needs. Below is a list of some of the approaches we combine.
THIS SECTION IS PROFORMA AND WILL BE COMPLETED WHEN WE CONCLUDE BUILDING OUR TEAM OF COUNSELLORS.
Rogerian or Person-Centred:
This is our core approach because it is built on empathy and building a mutually trusting relationship between counsellor and client.
Recognizes the importance of childhood development and the world you live in as shapers of who you are.
Recognizes that the world that shapes us is not benign. The experience of stereotypes and marginalization due to gender, sexuality, race, and disability can contribute to unhealthy mental states.
Positive Psychology and Motivational Enhancement Therapy:
Two approaches that focus on the strengths and resources of individuals. This is another core approach.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy:
CBT is a rational approach that dismantles self-defeating beliefs and thoughts that fuel depression and anxiety.
Mindfulness-based and somatic therapies:
Focus on stilling and relaxing mind and body and increasing awareness.
