MICHAEL MCLAUGHLIN (PH.D., RTC), Executive Director, Counsellor
Michael has a doctorate in Religious and Cross-cultural Studies and is a licensed Registered Therapeutic Counsellor with specialization in substance and behavioural addictions. He is creator and administrator of CHIU. He is motivated by his perception that digital media have potential to alienate individuals from the social and physical world. Screens really are screens; they block our view. Michael is concerned about the research that shows cognitive (thinking) performance can be impaired by some types of digital activity, especially during early development stages. DR. SUSAN BARBER (MA/PhD Education; MA Counselling Psychology): Education Programs Coordinator
Susan’s combines a career in K- adult teaching, educating pre- and in-service teachers with a Masters in Counselling Psychology. Augmenting her extensive classroom experience, counselling allows her to facilitate more effective learning through collaborating with educators and promoting student success through advancing socio-emotional skills, sense of belonging, and overall wellbeing. Susan’s research is directed toward teacher education and curriculum development, with specializations in language and literacy for marginalized student populations.
Dr. Barber will lead our public and schools education program. She will work with our counselling team to shape evidence-based presentations on optimizing the use of digital media in classroom education. She will contribute to our presentations on the impact of exposure to digital media on the learning and social development of children.
DEBORAH ENGLISH (RCC) Counsellor
Deborah received her Masters degree in Counselling Psychology from Adler University. She has spent over 10 years working within the field of addictions and mental health. In this capacity, she has worked in non-profit organizations with at-risk individuals (youth and adults), families, parents and couples to provide support in regaining control over their lives in their struggles with addiction, anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, trauma, relationships, identity issues and more. As such, she has worked with various populations including, but not limited to, the LGBTQ+ community, First Nations and immigrants/refugees.
She has training in CBT, DBT, EFT (tapping), hypnosis and uses mindfulness to facilitate implementation of healthy coping strategies.
In her work, she has also provided training to front-line staff, conducted drug and alcohol workshops for students and the general public, and has provided clinical supervision for Masters-level students in their practicum placements. She has also conducted group therapy in residential recovery programs.
Deborah works from a holistic, strengths-based approach with a feminist perspective that focuses on empowerment. Location: Vancouver
TREVIN SEWELL (RTC) Counsellor
Trevin Sewell is a Registered Therapeutic Counselling and is licensed in good standing with the Association of Cooperative Counselling Therapists of Canada (ACCT). He is also a Certified Sports Psychology Coach and a Certified Career Development Practitioner. He is mental health and recovery advocate and is a firm believer in promoting wellness and self-care. Also, Trevin is certified in good standing with the International Coaching Federation (ICF), and is accredited by The Certification and Accreditation Board of the American Association of Drugless Practitioners (AADP). Trevin brings a humanistic approach to therapy and brings elements of cognitive behaviour therapy and solution-based therapy while focusing on his clients’ strengths.
He also brings life experiences to his practice as he is in active recovery and is a strong advocate for living in the moment and focusing on the 24 hours you are given each day. Trevin specializes in athlete and performance counselling, sport psychology coaching, alcohol, drug, gambling and internet addiction, depression, anxiety, and recovery coaching. He works alongside you to explore exactly what you would like to accomplish from therapy and to set and maintain realistic goals and strategies that enable you to feel resilient and positive in moving forward with your life journey. Trevin opened his own private practice in Abbotsford, BC in 2017 with the hope of helping individuals that may be suffering or dealing with internal addiction and mental health concerns. Margo Lee Burton R.S.W., M.S.W., B.Ed., C.Y.T
Registered Social Worker/Psychotherapist
Margo’s path in life has been one of healing, following her heart and being in service to others. Learning and growing through addiction, depression, anxiety and burn-out, Margo has transformed her own life and herself. She considers herself a student for life and a teacher, guide, mentor and therapist.
Margo’s Masters in Social Work in the Indigenous Field of Study is supplemented by numerous years working with Indigenous Peoples providing teaching, counselling and community. Supporting individuals with addiction, self-care issues, family trauma, and identity questioning.
She also has certification in Transpersonal Psychotherapy and certification in teaching yoga and meditation.
Margo’s involvement with education ranges from being a director, teacher, and workshop facilitator and most recently as school social worker and a staff wellness coordinator where she had the opportunity to work with families, children and adolescents in the area of digital media use and self-regulation.
Her therapeutic approach combines spiritual contemplative tools, interwoven with powerful transpersonal therapy, graced with Indigenous approaches to healing and held together with my heart, intuition, and energy medicine gifts. Specific modalities often used are Jungian symbolism, Gestalt work, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Meditation, Dream Work, Emotional Freedom Technique.
